Different folks in my Twitter feed were commemorating today as the birthday of both Edward Hopper and Alexander Caldwell. When I went to Wikipedia to check, I found that both they and a really interesting array of others had been born on this day.
So, happy birthday to: Edward Hopper (1882), James Whale (1889), Stephen Vincent Benet (1898), Alexander Calder (1898), Amy Vanderbilt (1908), Bob Dole (1923), Orson Bean (1928), Oscar De la Renta (1932), Louise Fletcher (1934), Terence Stamp (1939), Alex Trebek (1940), George Clinton (1941), Bobby Sherman (1943), Tom Robbins (1946), Paul Schrader (1946), Albert Brooks (1947), Don Henley (1947), S.E. Hinton (1948), Alan Menken (1949), Al Di Meola (1954), Willem Dafoe (1955), John Leguizamo (1964), David Spade (1964), Rhys Ifans (1968), Rufus Wainwright (1973), and Selena Gomez (1992).
It is also Ratcatcher’s Day, in honor of the Pied Piper of Hamelin.
And the day in 1934 on which John Dillinger was gunned down in Chicago after seeing Manhattan Melodrama (see my post on that movie for more on that).
