Happy birthday, Judy Jetson!

Today marks the 50th anniversary of the premiere of The Jetsons, which I guess makes it in some sense the birthday of another of my namesakes, Judy Jetson.

Judy Jetson

I’m not going to go on at length about this, because I actually found out about the significance of the day via a great Smithsonian blog called “Paleofuture” by Matt Novak, who has given the matter far more thought than I ever have. He says, “‘The Jetsons’ and everything they represented were seen by so many not as a possible future, but a promise of one.”

Perhaps the most surprising thing about the show is that it only ran for one season — it plays a much bigger part in my childhood memories than you’d expect from a mere 24 episodes.
